HDDINFO 1.0
A DISK IDENTIFICATION UTILITY
*****************************
This program has been written to help identify MFM, RLL, ESDI and IDE hard
drives. If you know Murphy's Law, then you should be aware of the fact, that
when you'll need the technical data of your harddisk, you wont find it. You
say, that don't happen? Just think about what you would have to do when you
power-on your pc and all that happens looks like:
CMOS checksum invalid
Press F1 to run setup
Or maybe you're hardware distributor, tired of searching endless lists of
drive data when you setup your machines. Then you should try this program.
[1] Hardware requirements:
--------------------------
* at least 384 kByte of dos memory
* MDA, CGA, EGA or VGA video display
* optional mouse (supported if dos mouse driver installed)
* MSDOS 3.0 or above
[2] Tips for using this program:
--------------------------------
* Create a self booting floppy disk, include your mouse driver if you like,
and copy HDDINFO onto that disk. HDDINFO is useless if copied to a harddisk
which parameters have been lost!
* NEVER use HDDINFO for checking SCSI harddisks! This may cause unpredictable
results.
* You may check almost any MFM, RLL, ESDI and IDE harddisks. Please be aware
that normally
- IDE drives show up translation mode parameters
- MFM and RLL drives show up physical parameters
- ESDI drives show physical / translation parameters depending on
controller setup (normally a jumper)
* Harddisks may be soft-sectored or hard-sectored. Soft-sectored disks always
show a sector size of 512 bytes. Hard-sectored disks often show a sector
size including all header and sync bytes (unformatted capacity). HDDINFO
always uses a 512 byte sector size when calculating the disk capacity.
* Don't worry about differences in disk capacity between HDDINFO and the
manufacturer of your disk. Many disk manufacturers calculate 1 MByte as
1000 kBytes, but HDDINFO calculates 1 MByte as 1024 kBytes. (The CMOS of
your PC also will do it this way).
* HDDINFO will not run under MS-Windows, IBM OS/2 dos box and Desqview. To
get the information about the harddisks, HDDINFO must directly communicate
with the harddisk controller of your PC. This is normally impossible under
these environments.
[3] Using HDDINFO:
------------------
HDDINFO is a software designed to the SAA standard. If you have a mouse, just
click on the menues and button you like to activate. If you control HDDINFO
with your keyboard, use the ALT-key together with a letter to activate a menu
or button.
After starting the program, you will see an empty desktop with a menu which
consists of "HddInfo" and "Drives". Pressing Alt-H will open the first menu
where you can select the "About" and "Exit" commands. Pressing Alt-D will set
up the second menu which allows you to select "Drive C" or "Drive D". Please
remember that these drives letters correspond to your first and second
physical harddisks (like your PC CMOS setup does).
When you select a drive and HDDINFO is able to find that drive, your screen
might look like this:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drive information for [C]:
==========================
Media Type...........: Fixed harddisk, hard sectored, not MFM-coded
Cylinders............: 1024
Heads................: 8
Sectors per Head.....: 35
Bytes per Sector.....: 595
Bytes per Head.......: 20832
Sectors Total........: 286720
Capacity (MByte).....: 140
Controller Type......: Dual ported multiple sector read-ahead buffer
Controller Model.....: WD1007
Controller Revision..: REV. Y2
Serial Number........: 00000000000000000000
Buffer (Sectors).....: 32
Number of ECC-Bytes..: 7
Transfer speed.......: > 5 MBit/sec, ≤ 10 MBit/sec
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This screen shows the data of an 140 MByte Micropolis ESDI drive connected to
a Western Digital WD1007 controller.
You may now select "OK" to close this screen, or "Protocol", to write this
information to a disk file, or "Into CMOS", if you have a registered version
of HDDINFO. And this is best of HDDINFO: If your computer is equipped with an
AMI - Bios, HDDINFO is able to setup your hard drives into the CMOS setup. No
further user interaction is required to get the harddisk running.
[4] Trouble shooting:
---------------------
* HDDINFO cannot find any disk drive:
-----------------------------------
Usually this occurs when there is a hardware problem or the CMOS setup is
incorrect (e.g. bus clock too high for harddisk controller);
* HDDINFO recognizes drive C as drive D and vica versa:
-----------------------------------------------------
Normally this is a result of incorrect cabling or jumper setting on disk
drive;
* HDDINFO finds an IDE drive as both "C" and "D":
-----------------------------------------------
Your IDE drive has incorrect jumper settings;
[5] Legal terms and conditions:
-------------------------------
* HDDINFO is distributed as shareware. That means, you are encouraged to test
this program for a period of 30 days. After that period you should stop
using the program if you think it does not suit your needs. But I hope that
you will like HDDINFO and register the program. The following conditions
apply to registering:
"Single User Copy": This license is suitable for anybody. The user is
allowed to use this program on as many machines as he likes, but he is not
allowed to duplicate the program except for backup reasons. So if you're a
hardware dealer, you also can use this license for setting up your
customers' computers.
"Distributor Copy": This licence is for dealers only. It allows a dealer to
spend a copy of this program together with each harddisk he is selling. The
distributor copy is not for commercial reselling of HDDINFO. If HDDINFO is
sold together with hard drives and is installed on floppy, no more than
US $5.00 may be charged for copy costs.
* Pricing:
--------
Shareware Copy ...................... free
Single user Copy .................... US $ 10.00
Distributor Copy .................... US $100.00
If the shareware copy is copied by commercial shareware dealers, a charge
of no more than US $5.00 may be taken for copying costs.
These prices include shipment via CompuServe mail. If you prefer that I
send you a diskette, please add US $5.00. This seems to be very much but
after looking at my address you will understand:
